FERNISERING FREDAG DEN 28. MARTS FRA KL. 17-20

LOUISE HINDSGAVL (DK) / MEDIOCRITY IS NO CRIME / 28.03.-19.04.2014

I serien Sketch for a Larger Life fører Louise Hindsgavl abstraktionen skridtet videre.

Hun er repræsenteret i væsentlige samlinger nationalt og internationalt herunder Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, USA; MAD, Museum of Art and Design, New York, USA; Nationalmuseum Stockholm, Sverige; Victoria and Albert Museum London, UK; Designmuseum Danmark; Trapholt, Danmark og ASU Art Museum, Arizona, USA. Hun er blandt andet blevet tildelt Statens Kunstfonds 3-årige Arbejdsstipendium (2010), Silkeborg Kunstnerlegat (2010), Statens Kunstfonds Arbejdslegat (2008, 2006, 2004) og Biennaleprisen, Biennalen for Kunsthåndværk og Design (2004).

OPENING RECEPTION FRIDAY MARCH 28 FROM 5 TO 8

LOUISE HINDSGAVL / MEDIOCRITY IS NO CRIME / 28.03.-19.04.2014

Galleri Christoffer Egelund proudly presents the third solo exhibition by the Danish ceramic artist Louise Hindsgavl (b. 1973) entitled Mediocrity Is No Crime.

From a safe distance it looks quite innocent. But take a step closer to the porcelain figurations of Louise Hindsgavl, and you will have an unexpected, and sometimes unpleasant, surprise. Where you would expect cheerful shepherd boys and fair maidens you get complex creatures that lost their innocence long ago. A man with a full-grown paunch and legs of a horse is tearing open the back of an angel rendered helpless by a huge nail through its wings, a milking cow is performing intimate surgery on herself and abstract elements are melting into the deformed beings. Louise Hindsgavl has uncovered new territories within the field of porcelain art where others have since followed. Hindsgavl removes the porcelain figure from the utopian world where it normally resides and makes it take a position in the real world, a place not always so picture perfect.

At the exhibition Mediocrity is no crime Louise Hindsgavl presents two new series including a series of “white pieces” in continuation of the earlier work of the artist. In the sculpture Quiet Please we come across a frustrated doe whose head is that of a bear. She is just about to cut of the nose of her own fawn. Desperation and powerlessness has driven her to this loss of control which is highlighted by the fact that the piece is turned upside down. Another piece at the exhibition shows a human figurine who is on the point of cutting of his own nose for the sake of ideal beauty.

Abstraction occupies a prominent place in the new work of Louise Hindsgavl, and abstract elements seem to attack the figures and show the incomprehensible and the unsaid. In the series Sketch for a Larger Life Hindsgavl takes the abstraction to the next level. In these somewhat smaller and more colorful porcelain pieces it is possible to find reminiscences of the figurative universe of Hindsgavl, e.g. the tree, but other than that abstraction has taken over. The abstract narratives allow the artist to deal with the indefinable and at the same time open her artworks up to interpretation. With this series she reintroduces an element of play and freedom into her praxis, and raises the question: how perfect does it have to be?

With this exhibition, Louise Hindsgavl comments on our eternal search for perfection. Whether it concerns family life, working life or our looks, everything should be done a 120 percent. But such an endeavor has its consequences; stress, depression and frayed nerves. The shiny, clean surface of the porcelain symbolizes in a most delicate way the perfect appearances we are trying to keep up. But if you step closer and scratch the glaze you will quickly find the chaos, insecurity and imperfection hiding underneath.

Louise Hindsgavl graduated from Designskolen, Kolding, DK, in 1999 from the Department of ceramics and glass. She has exhibited widely in Denmark, Europe, the US and Asia since her graduation. She is represented in major collections worldwide including: Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, USA, MAD, Museum of Art and Design, New York, USA, Nationalmuseum Stockholm, Sweden; Victoria and Albert Museum London, UK; Designmuseum Denmark; Trapholt, Danmark and ASU Art Museum, Arizona, USA. Furthermore, among others, she has received: The Danish Art Foundation work grant of 3 years (2010), Silkeborg artist grant (2010), The Danish Art Foundation grant (2008, 2006, 2004) and The Biennale Award, The Biennale of Louise HindgavlArts and Craft and Design (2004).

Michael Johansson / Lines and Layers / 20.09.-19.10.2013

Michael Johansson, Courtesy Galleri Christoffer Egelund
Michael Johansson, Courtesy Galleri Christoffer Egelund

Galleri Christoffer Egelund proudly presents the exhibition Lines and Layers by the Swedish artist Michael Johansson. Lines and layers unfold in the artist’s strict, yet witty, compositions of everyday objects.

The exhibition is primarily made out of new pieces that can be divided into two series; every piece constructed from objects found at one of the artist’s many visits at flea markets. Foldable Ladder Assembly Kit – II is one example from the series of 1:1 construction kits. A ladder has been taken apart and the parts put together in a metal frame with strings attached. To strengthen the association with construction kits the pieces has been painted entirely orange. The function of the ladder has been removed to transform the object into art. The same can be said of the other type of artworks presented at the exhibit. Here multiple objects have been stacked together as real life Tetris cubes. Boxes are stacked as a sandwich with an intermediate layer of smaller boxes and containers put together in strict order and thereby impede the originally intended function.

What unites the two different types of pieces is the fact that gathering, collecting and assembling is essential to human beings. We have moved from the hunter-gatherer society to a gatherer-assembler society. We gather stuff around us and assemble ourselves, as is shown in condensed form at the exhibition. When the artist is out gathering objects at the flea markets, he follows a very stringent system, namely one where he finds one seemingly unique object and then continues his search until he finds another one just like it. This underlines the issue of authenticity in the age of mass production. However, all hope is not lost in Johansson’s art, because even if the objects are the same, the marks left by their users are unique. This in turn leads to thoughts of a similar issue, namely the fact that a large part of a person’s identity is defined by consumption. That is, you assemble your identity with self-assembly furniture from IKEA.

Johansson’s work continues the tradition of the readymade; the exhibition of mass produced, everyday objects as art, started by the famous urinal (Fountain, 1917) of the Dadaist Marcel Duchamp. But instead of just exhibiting the ladder or the boxes as they are found he uses the readymades at materials as a painter uses paint and canvas.

The Swedish artist achieves to create order in the mess of things surrounding us. Harmony and balance emerges when he makes use of traditional artistic effects such as straight lines, repetition and colour balancing. The artworks are delights for the eye. But it is the symbolic value and storytelling that is at the forefront. Michael Johansson uses the mass produced objects to create unique artworks with several layers of meaning to help us reflect on our everyday surroundings.

Michael Johansson graduated from Trondheim Art Academy in 2003 with studies at Kunsthochschule Berlin-Wei?ensee (2002) og Royal College of Art, Stockholm (2003) and took his master degree at Malmö Art Academy (2003-2005). Since he graduated he has exhibited extensively both in and outside of Sweden including at Malmö Konstmuseum (SE), Galerie Filomena Soares (PT), Moscow Museum of Modern Art (RU), Meessen de Clercq (BE), Vigeland-museet (NO) og Nikolaj Kunsthal (DK). Furthermore, he is represented in several collections among these Malmö Konstmuseum (SE) and has received various grants including Norwegian Government’s 3-year working grant and IASPIS artists in residence in Tokyo.

Galleri Christoffer Egelund cordially invites you to the opening of Michael Johansson: Lines and Layers on Friday the 20th of September from 5-8 pm. The artist will be present during the opening reception. The exhibition will run until October the 19th 2013. Opening hours: Monday-Friday 11-18, Saturdays 12-16. DANSK

Værkerne fremtræder smukt for øjet.

Louise Hindsgavl / Human Desires / Aug 30 – Sep 28 2013

HumanDesires

Galleri Christoffer Egelund proudly presents the site specific installation Human Desires by the Danish artist Louise Hindsgavl (b. 1973).

Anthropomorphic frogs with feathery wings and their friends occupy the project room at Galleri Christoffer Egelund from Friday, August the 30th.

The series Human Desires consists of hovering nightmare tableaus in porcelain displaying human lust and desire – the forbidden kind. The bestial side of man has taken over, and this is evident as the porcelain figurines are composed of equal parts human and animal. In one of the mobiles a player with a cow’s head is conducting female genital surgery on herself, grinning, apparently unaffected by the circumstances (Human Desires #7). The artist emphasizes the absurdity of such a voluntary cosmetic operation particularly if you consider its evil twin: involuntary female circumcision, also known as Female Genital Mutilation, often seen in parts of Africa and The Middle East. In another part of the room we are confronted with the remnants of a playhouse after a bombing raid. This is a case of vengefulness where innocence was ignored.

As always, in the narrative universes of Louise Hindsgavl we are lured in by the beautiful, seemingly innocent, porcelain and then in for a thought-provoking shock when the traditional shepherd girl grows animal limbs and conducts cosmetic genital surgery.

Louise Hindsgavl graduated from Designskolen, Kolding, DK, in 1999 and has exhibited widely in Denmark, Europe, the US and Asia since her graduation. She is represented in major collections worldwide including: National Museum Stockholm, Sweden; Victoria and Albert Museum London, UK; Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MIA, USA; Carlsberg Art Fondation, DK; The The Röhsska Museum, Gothenburg, SE; Designmuseum, Copenhagen, DK; Trapholt, Kolding, DK; ASU Art Museum, Arizona, USA etc. Furthermore, among others, she has received: The Danish Art Foundation work grant of 3 years (2010), Silkeborg artist grant (2010), The Danish Art Foundation grant (2008, 2006, 2004) and The Biennale Award, The Biennale of Arts and Craft and Design (2004). DK

Hun er repræsenteret i væsentlige samlinger nationalt og internationalt herunder Nationalmuseum Stockholm, Sverige; Victoria and Albert Museum London, UK; Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MIA, USA; Ny Carlsbergfondet; Röhsska Museet, Göteborg, SE; Designmuseum Danmark; Trapholt, Danmark, ASU Art Museum, Arizona, USA, m.fl. PREVIEW FRIDAY AUGUST 16TH FROM 4-7 PM.
PLEASE JOIN US.

Galleri Christoffer Egelund proudly presents the first exhibition in Danmark by the New York based Cuban artist Armando Marino (b. 1968) “Under The Red Light” displaying new paintings and works on paper.

”I would like to ski in the mountains, I know it’s impossible for me right now in my situation, but at least I can do it in my dreams”
– Nadia, a prostitute. 25 years old.

The present series of paintings for the Galleri Christoffer Egelund have been inspired by  Nadia`s dream. Her dreams were the only place, where she could be free, untouchable and happy.
The women trafficking and prostitution are common, real problems in our contemporary society. The media coverage is huge, from films, documentaries, TV series, books, etc.. It happens every day, everywhere and at all times, so it was unavoidable for Armando Marino to approach this issue through his work. He has always worked with openess to social conflicts and contemporary reality. That has been the case in previous exhibitions as ”Tervuren Tales”, in Belgium, which investigated the Belgian colonial past and the plunder of cultural heritage of the Congo and “Recent Paintings from the Year of the Protester”, held in NY, 2012, which centered as its name indicates on the Arab revolutions and recently outraged movements occurred in much of the world.
From the beginning, Marino understood that the approach to the subject would be very difficult due to two factors: the complexity of the problem and the fact that this issue has been addressed through art, especially painting, for a long time and by many artists.

The issue is complex because it encompasses both the women forced into prostitution by poverty, the ones born in that context and therefore their vision of the world is conditioned by that situation, those who have been abducted, sold or enslaved, and the ones that do it for pleasure, to get money fast and easy, even to pay their college. Nevertheless, from the sociological point of view there are many “external” factors (political, religious, cultural and social) that define or mold the issue, making it more complicated and difficult to be solved.

Far from addressing the problem from the victimization, Armando tries to analyze some of its facets. For this reason each painting corresponds to a specific idea or situation, comprising from the trafficking of women (Cargo), suicide (The Red Fence), broken dreams or aspirations (I’m Your Princess), to the use or abuse of drugs (Amsterdam).
Each work is very specific in its subject and pictorial realization, something that is common in most of the recent work.

Prostitution has been the subject of many artists and their paintings throughout art history. The prostitute was the lover, the model, the desired object, the obscene secret. Its images populate hundreds of works in the traditional Western and Eastern painting and many of these paintings have become masterpieces like Manet’s Olympia or The Demoiselles d’Avignon by Picasso.

Armando Marino believes what really defines prostitution in our time is the trafficking of women. Based on this belief his paintings explore the effects of such trafficking for prostitution in contemporary society. Photographs taken from the web, magazines, films or books, inspire all paintings in this exhibition. The compiled images are then transformed and recreated according to a specific idea. The original context disappears to give rise to a new context, symbolic or metaphorical, surreal, painterly and in some cases, oniric, which allows him to deflect the immediate reference from its source, while expanding the semantic universe of the artwork.

Marino’s intention is to confront the viewer with the complexity of this issue. Giving no clear references of place or people, diluting the reality, replacing the white and black for an infinite color spectrum, characteristic of our contemporary visual art, thus helping to erase our preconceptions and prejudices about a subject that deserves our attention, now more than ever.?

Armando Marino (b. 1968 in Cuba) lives and works in New York. He graduated from Jose Varona Pedagogical Institute, Havana 1992 and from Rijksakademie Van Beldeende Kunsten, Amsterdam 2005. He has exhibited widely in Europe, USA, Africa and Cuba. His works are represented in major private and public collection around the world such as Deutsche Bank Collection; Shelley and Donald Rubin Collection, US; 21cMuseum, Kentucky, US; Centro Wifredo Lam, Havana, Cuba;  ASU Art Museum, Arizona, US; Arttoteek Den Hagg, Nederland; National Museum of Valjevo, Yugoslavia; University of Virginia Art Museum, US; Marcelino Botín Foundation, Spain; Howard Farber Collection, New York;  Colección Berardo Museo de Arte Moderna, Sintra, Portugal etc. Furthermore Marino has been awarded The Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2011 and The Christopher Reynolds Foundation grant in 2010.

Jacob Dahlstrup, Cosmographicum, 17.05.-15.06.2013, Galleri Christoffer Egelund,
Jacob Dahlstrup, Cosmographicum, 17.05.-15.06.2013, Galleri Christoffer Egelund,
Derudover indgår Dahlstrups værker i The Davis Museum, Massachusetts, USA og CCA Andratx Collection, Mallorca, Spanien.
Galleri Christoffer Egelund proudly presents the exhibition “Cosmographicum” featuring new works on paper and ceramic sculptures by Jacob Dahlstrup (b. 1985).

The works come to life in a unique intersection between the fascination of outer space, “cosmos” and the concept of drawing or mapping “graphicum”. In motifs as well as scale the works represents a wide range of expressions, from small intensely detailed studies of the surface of the moon to grand dramatic celestial explosions. The interest in cosmos has also been featured in Dahlstrups earlier works where e.g. Galileo Galilei and Johannes Kepler has been the center of attention. With this exhibition the artist aimes his spotlight at the space adventures of modern times with imaginative narrative references to the well know images of e.g. the moon landing and the entire Apollo space program.
The materiality of the works also play a central role in Dahlstrups narratives. Here the paper does not solely serve as a practical base for the drawings but is carefully treated to give an impression of depth and texture. Through an intense application of graphite and red chalk –also called Sanguine- onto the surface Dahlstrup creates a deep dark surface from which he then digs out the lighter nuances from the paper’s fibres using sand paper, grinding tools and even tattoo needles.
With a linguistic greeting in the exhibition title to Johannes Kepler’s publication on the mystries of the univers entitled “Mysterium Cosmographicum” Dahlstrup invites us on a journey in time and space in the grand company of both astronauts, nuns, shining celestial bodies and monkeys.
Jacob Dahlstrup (b. 1985) lives and works in Copenhagen, Danmark. He graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2010 and has already exhibit his works in USA, France, United Kingdom, Spain and Germany etc. Furthermore Dahlstrups works are included in The Davis Museum, Massachusetts, US and CCA Andratx Collection, Mallorca, Spain.
Galleri Christoffer Egelund invites you to the opening of the show “Cosmographicum” on Friday May 17th from 4pm – 7pm. At the reception Jacob Dahlstrup will be present. The exhibition will run until June 15th 2013. Opening hours: Monday – Friday from 11-18, Saturdays from 12-16. JASON JÄGEL (US) / THE CASTLE AND OTHER WORKS / 26.10.-01.12.2012

Behavioral Automatism
Jason Jägel, Behavioral Automatism, 2012, Courtesy Galleri Christoffer Egelund

Galleri Christoffer Egelund kan med stor glæde præsentere udstillingen ”The Castle & Other Works” med den amerikanske kunstner Jason Jägel (f. 1971). Det er hans anden soloudstilling i galleriet. Den anerkendte kunstners værker er bl.a. opkøbt af San Francisco Museum of Modern Art og Museum of Modern Art, New York.

IDA KVETNY / SOLOUDSTILLING / RAM / 21.09.-20.10.2012

Ida Kvetny
Ida Kvetny
The Amphitheatre, 2012
Acrylic, gel-pen, pastel on paper, 76 x 57 cm.

I 2007 tog hun en Master i Fine Art fra Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design i London.

ENGLISH

Galleri Christoffer Egelund invites you to the opening of the exhibition ”RAM” on Friday September 21st from 4pm – 7pm. The Exhibition will be opened by DR’s Cultural host Adrian Hughes, known from “Smagsdommerne and Kunstquizzen” at 4 pm. At the opening Ida Kvetny will be present and the young Scandinavian trio Scarlet Pleasure give a concert. The exhibition will run until October 20th.

Galleri Christoffer Egelund proudly present the exhibition “RAM” by the Danish artist Ida Kvetny (b. 1980). It is her first solo show at the gallery and the exhibition includes new paintings, sculptures, drawings, reliefs, animation and installation.

Kvetny is known for her unique and original dreamlike universe filled with fantasy figures and strong multicolored surfaces. In the past five years, the talented artist has experimented with different constellations of sculptures, paintings, animation and drawings in order to explore the painting as a medium; it’s possibilities and limitations.

The exhibition title “RAM” refers to the classical myth of Jason and the Golden Fleece and is also short for “Random Access Memory”; a form of computer data storage. Jason was a displaced prince, who captured the Golden Fleece and thus conquered his father’s throne back from his malicious uncle. At the exhibition Kvetny shows new works thematically inspired by the title. Among others the themes include courage, magic, hero worship and the journey as a phenomenon.

At the exhibition Kvetny shows an installation consisting of a three-meter high wooden sculpture (in collaboration with sculptor Finn Rúne) and a series of paintings. The sculpture is build of simple geometric elements; a barrel, a jar, and the head of a ram on the top. In terms of content the sculpture points to the motifs in her paintings, which represent a complex and magical dreamlike world, where a ram is often included. The installation suggests a contemporary visual journey seeking an animal skin in an indefinable, magical space. By the presentation of this work Kvetny also explores the shape, rhythm and the narrative, which a traditional painting stands for.

In connection with the word “Random Access Memory”, Kvetny also explores the automatic drawing and the abstract painting. The paintings are an explosion of shapes, surfaces that overlap, psychedelic patterns, vibrant colors, animals and faces. The works invite you on a journey through a series of visual mazes, like the Internet, which result in a multitude of more or less controlled imagery. While the myth of Jason was orally passed on and then written down, Kvetny here ask whether the stories, that get stored and transmitted in today’s information age is randomly selected.

Ida Kvetny lives and works in Copenhagen. In 2007 she took a Master in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. Her works have been shown at the exhibition “Comix!” (2007) at Brandts in Odense and at the major collectors show “Mad Love” (2007) at Arken Museum of Modern Art. In addition, she has exhibited at Holstebro Kunstmuseum, Charlottenborg Kunsthal, Museum of Art, Seoul National University and in numerous galleries. Spring 2012 she was included in “Kraks Blå bog”, and in the near future you can see her works at Torrance Art Museum, Los Angeles and at Munch Gallery in New York.

Opening hours: Monday – Friday from 11-18, Saturdays from 12-16. For further information and press photographs, please contact the gallery at: info@nullchristofferegelund.dk or at +45 33 93 92 00.

Union Of Strangers / Christoffer Joergensen / 17.08.-15.09.2012

Joergensens ”Parliaments” består af to formelt forskellige serier.

YUICHI HIRAKO (JP) | DAVID DELLAGI (DK) | 20.01.-25.02.2012

Yuichi Hirako Memories of My Garden / Ship
Yuichi Hirako, Sleeping in the Pine Forest, 2011, Acrylic on canvas, 130x162 cm.

Main Gallery: Yuichi Hirako, Sleeping In the Pine Forest.
Project Room: David Dellagi: Insanitorium
January 20 – February 25 2012

Opening reception
Friday January 20th from 4-7 pm.

It is with great pleasure that Galleri Christoffer Egelund presents ”Sleeping In the Pine Forest”, the gallery’s first solo show with the Japanese Artist Yuichi Hirako. The young artist presents new paintings and sculptures, which brings us into a colourful, dramatic and dreamlike universe. ”Insanitorium” is the name of another exhibition shown in the gallery’s project room. In this show Danish artist David Dellagi presents sculptures and collages where themes like horror, naivety and black humor go hand in hand.

Yuichi Hirako is interested in the human relationship with nature and the forest as a special place. Although many of us surround ourselves with plants every day, eg. house plants and in parks, there is an apparent division between us and the other living beings – that is the plants. Some Japanese see the forest as a sacred place. On the contrary in Western folklore, the forest is often portrayed as being uncivilized and barbaric.

Hirako strives in his work to break the boundaries between humans and nature. His paintings and sculptures depict people with plant-like heads placed in forests. In his largest painting “Memories of My Garden/Lake Side” plants, people, houses and a car are weaved helplessly together. In other expressive paintings we encounter a green forest-creature, which gives fuel to our experience of fantasy and adventure. Whether the forest is a good or unpleasant place is entirely up to the viewer. In other words; in the work of Hirako nature and culture collide, and we are left in a primitive state.

Yuichi Hirako (b. 1982 in Okayama, Japan) graduated in 2005 from Wimbledon College of Art in London. He lives and works in Tokyo, and he has participated in several group- and solo shows. To name a few the artist has exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art, Gunma, Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, Aichi Arts Center, The Museum of Kyoto, etc. In 2012 the artist will present solo shows at INAX Gallery, GALLERY MoMo Ryogoku and Tokyo Wonder Site Art Cafe kurage in Tokyo.

In the Project Room David Dellagi presents spectacular works where fear, struggle, innocence and sexual frustration are humorously presented. His motifs seem to express a certain state of mind in a very direct and urgent manner, and his works clearly reveal an interest in surrealism as well as cartooning. Among Dellagi´s exhibited works is the piece “Telephone”, a sculpture of a female torso turned into an old fashioned telephone. The woman seems to shout: “How did I end up here?” Dellagi´s sculptures are made from papier maché, an unpretentious material which is a fine contrast to the horrid and naïve. Also shown is a collection of Dellagi´s collages. These present a more minimalist approach mixed with fantasy, humor, insanity and the anatomic grotesque.

David Dellagi (b. 1970) works with drawing, collage, sculpture, video and animation. In addition to numerous exhibitions at home, Dellagi´s works has also been shown in Los Angeles and Stockholm etc. In 2012 Dellagi has a solo show in Mexico City, and his works will be presenting by Space of Drawing at Art Herning in the end of January. Dellagi lives and works in Copenhagen.

Galleri Christoffer Egelund invites You to the opening of ”Sleeping In the Pine Forest” and ”Insanitorium” Friday January the 20th from 4pm to 7pm. Yuichi Hirako and David Dellagi will be present, and the exhibitions runs until February the 25th. Opening hours: Monday – Friday 11am to 6pm, Saturdays 12pm – 4pm. ———–

Sideløbende i galleriets projektrum vises soloudstillingen ”Insanitorium”.

Kunstneren har bl.a. udstillet på The Museum of Modern Art i Gunma, Museum of Contemporary Art i Tokyo, Aichi Arts Center, The Museum of Kyoto m.fl.

Kvinden synes at råbe: ”Hvordan endte jeg lige her?”

DOLLS HOUSE | GROUP SHOW | 19.08.-18.09.2011

Kathrine Ærtebjerg, Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen, Julie Nord, Kirstine Roepstorff, Marianne Grønnow, Astrid Kruse Jensen, Lise Blomberg, Dorte Jelstrup, Sophia Kalkau, Elisabeth Toubro, Katya Sander20 August – 18 September 2011

Opening reception
Friday August 19th from 16-20

Galleri Christoffer Egelund is proud to present DOLLS HOUSE, a group exhibition showing new works of 11 prominent Danish artists. The invited artists are all women and include the following prominent names: Kathrine Ærtebjerg, Julie Nord, Kirstine Roepstorff, Lise Blomberg Andersen, Astrid Kruse Jensen, Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen, Sophia Kalkau, Elisabeth Toubro, Katya Sander, Marianne Grønnow and Dorte Jelstrup. In this exhibition the gallery wants to mark the high artistic quality among Danish female artists, and point out that despite the high standard the female sex remains underrepresented in national museum collections.

The shows title DOLLS HOUSE seems to refer to the innocent adolescence of a little girl. Dolls House is also slang for brothel, and in that sense points critically towards the female body as a commodity. In addition, the title refers to the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen’s play “A Dolls House” (1879), where Nora makes the commencing move in the struggle for sexual equality. In the show the viewer is invited into an universe where different media shows themes such as gender roles, femininity and fairytales.

In the exhibition we witness a magical dream world in Julie Nord’s (b. 1970) detailed drawings. She is known for her ornamental works depicting graceful dolls, as she mixes the fantastic with the reminiscent of life as being fragile. Painter Kathrine Ærtebjerg (b. 1969) also portrays a feminine and ambiguous universe, but often employs a stronger sexual undertone to the work. Unlike Nord and Ærtebjerg the works of Lise Blomberg Andersen (b. 1971) contain more realism, but not less fairytale.
Her contribution to the show consists of new paintings depicting children. Also Astrid Kruse Jensen’s (b. 1975) work deals with the notion of adventure. Using the technique of long exposure her photographs presents a surreal and supernatural universe. Besides Kruse Jensen, Sophia Kalkau (b. 1960) also participates with a number of photographs. Characteristic of her work is a preoccupation with transformation and metamorphosis.

Kirstine Roepstorff (b. 1972) shows collages. Using unconventional materials like pearls and fabric, the artist is known to investigate themes like feminism and a criticism of political power. On the contrary Marianne Grønnow’s (b. 1962) contribution consists of painting and sculpture. Her trademark is the transformation of cardboard and paper into seductive and detailed works. However this show gives a unique opportunity to experience her work in plaster, a new material in her art production. A feminine view can also be found at Dorte Jelstrup (b. 1964), whose work can be seen as analytical reflections on themes such as lust, sexuality and gender. Themes such as gender roles and equality also interests sculptor Elisabeth Toubro (b. 1956), whose trademark is complex sculptures, which forces the viewer to do some intellectual work. Also Katya Sander (b. 1970) likes to challange the viewer with her conceptual works that asks open questions about humans and languages. Last but not least, Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen (b. 1970) contributes to the exhibition with photographs from her performance series “Afghan Hound”, with what she is represented at the 2011 Venice Biennale.

Galleri Christoffer Egelund invites to the opening of DOLLS HOUSE Friday August the 19th from 4pm to 8pm, where the artists will be present. The exhibition runs from August 19th – September 18th 2011. Opening hours: Monday – Friday 11am to 6pm, Saturdays 12pm – 4pm.
