FAURSCHOU FOUNDATION INVITES YOU TO BE PART OF A NEW PARTICIPATORY ARTWORK BY ARTIST CAI GUO-QIANG, August 25-September 2, 2012. CAI GUO-QIANG’s exhibition at Faurschou Foundation in Copenhagen will open September 6th, 2012.

This fall, Faurschou Foundation will present a exhibition in Denmark of artist Cai Guo-Qiang. As a key component of the exhibition, Cai will create new series of gunpowder drawings on-site with the assistance of local volunteers. This is a rare opportunity to work with one of the most influential contemporary artists in the world.

We will need 90 volunteers for this project. The gunpowder drawings will be created from August 25 to September 2, with the dates for ignitions still to be decided. Volunteers are encouraged to register as many time slots as possible to work with the artist.

To qualify for the participation, all volunteers must attend safety training on August 24, 16.00-19.00.

What will volunteers do?

Volunteers begin by helping to make giant stencils from cardboard and placing stencils on Japanese hemp paper. The artist then lays gunpowder over the stencils and paper. After the ignition, volunteers will follow the artist’s and studio staff’s instructions to help extinguish out the small sparks around the drawings.

Who can participate?

Volunteers must be:

• at least 16 years old; if you are under 18, we require a signed permission from a consenting parent/guardian;

• able to lift and move large objects;

• able to sit, crawl, and kneel on the floor while working;

• patient, as there will be some waiting during the process

Registration

Please RSVP as soon as possible to: volunteers@nullfaurschou.com to receive an application form with available time slots. Registration will be on a first come, first served basis, with preference for volunteers who can fulfil more than one time slot. Most ideal is if the volunteer can come every day.

About Cai Guo-Qiang

Cai Guo-Qiang was born in1957 in Quanzhou City, Fujian Province, China. Trained in stage design at the Shanghai Theater Academy, his work has since crossed multiple mediums within art, including drawing, installation, video and performance art. While living in Japan from 1986 to 1995, he explored the properties of gunpowder in his drawings, an inquiry that eventually led to his experimentation with explosives on a massive scale and to the development of his signature explosion events. Drawing upon Eastern philosophy and contemporary social issues as a conceptual basis, these projects and events aim to establish an exchange between viewers and the larger universe around them, utilizing a site-specific approach to culture and history. This fall, he will create his signature gunpowder drawings for the first time in Denmarkas part of a solo exhibition commissioned by Faurschou Foundation.
