Kunstforeningen GL STRAND viser udstillingen om dansk-amerikaneren Jacob A. Riis (1849-1914), der blev kendt for sit banebrydende fotojournalistiske arbejde. Fotografierne indgik i hans dedikerede arbejde for at forbedre livs- og boligvilkårene for New Yorks mange fattige immigranter.
Fotografier, tekstuddrag, magasiner og breve belyser Riis’ arbejde og fortæller på unik vis historien om et pionerarbejde og samtidig en vigtig del af amerikansk historie.
Jacob A. Riis. Light in Dark Places forener Riis’ fotografier med hans arkiv, der tilsammen fortæller historien om hans liv med hans egne ord og fotografier. Udstillingen er oprindeligt udarbejdet af Museum of the City of New York, siden præsenteret på Library of Congress, Washington D.C., og vises nu i en revideret udgave i GL STRAND og i foråret 2017 på Ribe Kunstmuseum.

In 2016-2017 Kunstforeningen GL SRAND presents an exhibition about the Danish-American Jacob A. Riis (1849-1914), who is known for his ground-breaking photojournalistic work. His photos were part of his work to improve the living conditions of the many poor imigrants in New York.
The exhibition tells the story of Riis’ pioneering work and an important part of American history through photos, texts excepts, magazines and letters.
The exhibition brings together the photos by Riis and his archive, which together tells the story of his life and work. It is originally produced by the Museum of the City of New York, hereafter presented at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. and is now shown in a revised version at GL STRAND and at Ribe Art Museum in the spring 2017.
