During a two-month Danish International Visiting Artist residency at the Department of Arts and Cultural Studies at the University of Copenhagen, artist and architect Luis Berríos-Negrón will conduct a workshop about the collective study and building of an archive.

The workshop takes, as its starting point, a series of mobile, modular units called Turtles developed by Berríos-Negrón and invites workshop participants to contribute actively to the thinking and shaping of a new archival structure.

The workshop will unfold through three correlated phases: the architectonic – as an opening to a series of initial discussions surrounding theoretical notions as well as physical examples of archives; the reticulate – as graphic and sculptural exercises that explore ideas about cataloguing, classification, and retrieval; and the architectural – informing a collective prototyping that can serve as a scalable system for archiving and displaying knowledge for artistic, curatorial, and academic endeavour.

The prototype will serve as proposal for the new campus building KUA2 of the University of Copenhagen.

We invite students and faculty members from the Department of Arts and Cultural Studies, The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (visual arts, architecture, and design) and anyone else interested to sign up for the workshop. Participation is free and flexible. For parts of the workshop, students and faculty members from Oslo National Academy of Fine Arts, and from Technische Universität Braunschweig will join us along with invited guest speakers including Theo Barth, N55, and Sven Spieker.

The workshop convenes for the first time on Monday, March 4 at 10:00 am.

The workshop is co-organized by Luis Berríos-Negrón and Trine Friis Sørensen, curator and PhD fellow at Department of Arts and Cultural Studies.
